Rapid intensification episodes computed live from this season's tracked storms, using the same ≥30 kt / 24 h definition as the historical climatology below — but kept separate from it. These come from provisional operational best-track data, not final HURDAT2, so they are not included in the 1979–present totals, any chart above, the top-gain table, or the onset map on this page. Based on preliminary operational best-track data. NHC's post-season reanalysis can revise a storm's wind history — in marginal cases, this could change whether the storm still meets the RI threshold.

2026 enters the climatology above once NHC publishes the final season HURDAT2 release (typically ~spring 2027) andbuild_ri_climatology.py is re-run against it.

Methods

RI definition: sustained wind increasing by at least 30 kt over exactly 24 h, with both the start and end fix classified tropical (TD, TS, or HU — no subtropical or extratropical fixes). This is the NHC's own operational RI threshold. Overlapping 24 h windows within one storm are merged into a single episode, so one multi-day burst counts once, not once per 6-hourly step.

Why 1979: counts here start at the satellite era. Best-track winds before routine geostationary coverage are reconstructed from sparse ship, aircraft, and land reports and aren't homogeneous enough to compare RI rates across decades — an apparent rise in RI frequency across the full HURDAT2 record can partly reflect better observation rather than a real trend. 1979 onward is the commonly used satellite-era cutoff for this kind of comparison, and matches the pipeline's default (overridable with --min-year).
